So do I have to pay CA registration fees and insurance on a car that I don't plan on driving?

Basically, I found a great deal on a car and I plan for it to be my NEXT car. I plan on buying it this week but I DONT plan on driving it until January because I currently have a far commute to work and my current car gets better gas mileage. But I plan to quit soon. I cant afford to insure both cars and I really want to avoid the $1500-2000 in registration fees.

  1. Weigh the possible depreciation that the car would have between now and January versus the cost of owning the vehicle during the same time period. If it's really that good a deal; price versus mileage and condition, then just buy the car but park it in your garage, backyard, side drive, etc.

Here in California, we're allowed to register a vehicle at a reduced rate for planned non-operation (PNO). Under these terms, you're not allowed to drive the car at all. You'll have to be sly and drive it around the block to keep it going. If you're financing the vehicle, I would not get it since you'd be paying interest on a vehicle that you don't use.

If it's an SUV gas guzzler, I'd stay away from it because there's a good chance that it will drop significantly in value in the next 6 months. I've seen a year 2000 Range Rover HSE (114,000 miles) for under $6,000. When gas hits $5/gallon, I'm sure you'll be finding "deals" on V8 cars and SUVs.

  2. You still SHOULD register it, just as a PNO (planned non-operational) vehicle. You should ask the seller to put a low price on the car on the bill of sale so you only have to pay sales tax on that. Maybe if they say your family and they sold it to you for 200.00? As far as insurance you may be forced to have liability insurance but you may just want to hold off and ask someone at the DMV.

  3. you don't have to have insurance or registration on the car if it is not on the road IE. being drivin. however if you have to drive it from the selling location to ur home u can get a 3day registration so u can get it home. if you don't do this and you get pulled over you can get in lots of trouble

  4. So,a few of things you are supposed to think.I have had good experience here.......http://car-insurance.online-tips.info/ca...
