I plan on going to Canada to become an RN. I am a medical assistant now. Would it be better to apply for a permanent visa or just apply for a study visa, since ill be there for more than 4 years studying? I have looked on various websites for help and also called the consulate but no answers have been given to me. I am a single 23 yo, with a lot of job experience. I am totoally confused on how to go about this. If i were to apply for a study visa, would i be able to apply for a permanent visa after 3 years? i need answers bad! Is it required to have a lawyer or sponser? I have done all my research but i still dont know how to go about the whole ordeal. Please help me?!

  1. http://www.cic.gc.ca/ is the definitive website.

A couple of words of warning:

It takes at least a year to apply to be an official immigrant.

You can get a study visa but you need to be accepted by a college, and will pay non resident = higher fees, with no guarantee that any application to stay in Canada as an immigrant will be accepted when you finish college.

You do not need a lawyer or agency - you will be paying them to do paperwork you can do yourself. A close relative in Canada can sponsor you if you immigrate.

  2. I don't know specific answers to all your questions, but you could contact the Candian consulate nearest you for help.  See site below for list.  Now...I have known quite a few Canadian nurses in the U.S....the reason they come to the U.S. is because they earn MUCH higher wages in the U.S. than in Canada...so you may want to consider that in your plans.

  3. a good place to start looking for answers might be:

    http://www.cic.gc.ca/

Thats the offcial Canadian Immigration site.

I can tell you RNs are in huge demand here, especially in western Canada

    http://www.vch.ca  (Vancouver Health region)

    http://www.calgaryhealthregion.ca (Calgary)

will give you ideas on employment opportunities and as well, they are very deperate so if you call may be able to offer practical advise on how to go about it

    good luck
