  1. Yes, your boss is under no obligation to keep you for six weeks.  When you give notice, you are doing so to give your employer time to fill your position.  They are not obligated to accept your terms.


  2. Yes, they can ask you to leave the same day if they choose. I don't normally recommend giving more than two weeks.

  4. Yes, Do not give 6 weeks if you can not afford to be let go.  Managers are supposed to give more time though.

  6. why 6 weeks? customary is 2 weeks and even though you may give notice the boss can fire you when you give ur notice...i would only offer 2 weeks notice...

  7. 6 weeks is way too much notice, especially if you are counting on the paychecks for those weeks. Many employers now let you go on the day of the notice. Seems many feel that since you are leaving, you won't have a good work attitude or ethics.

  8. Why would you give 6 weeks notice?  They could tell you to leave on the day you give notice, even if you had planned to work the 6 weeks because you need the money.

    Give two at the max, but remember, when companies decide to lay off or fire people, they don't give any notice.

    Protect yourself.  You job will never look out for you the way you can.

  9. Yep.  They can ask you to leave the premises immediately and could have security walk you to your office to get your personal items then escort you off the premises.  Two weeks notice is plenty, unless you can start the new job immediately.

    When they allow you to work after knowing that you are leaving it is a courtesy.

    If you have a good relationship with your boss, they are more likely to allow you to work the 6 weeks.  ESPECIALLY since you are not giving them only 2 weeks notice.

    There is a risk, though.  Most times when I have left a job, I gave 2 weeks and worked those 2 weeks.  I have had one say..."When you know that you are leaving, you are already gone mentally.  Finish the day and call it good."

    Also, if they feel you might somehow sabotage the company, they will show you the door when you put in notice.  Considering that you are giving 6 weeks notice, I do not suspect you would do that, and I doubt they would suspect it either.

Yes, they can, and many times they will unless you have a contract of some sort that specifies otherwise.  Partly this will depend on your relationship with the employer.  If you are leaving under any negative circumstances, many employers want to get you out the door as quickly as possible so you don't have a chance to sabotage the business at all or taint the attitude of any employees remaining.  If you are currently working and leaving under positive circumstances, they may appreciate the extra notice, but that is something you have to decide on your own.

  13. Depends really. Does he like you? Sometimes dependent on the company they will dismiss you right away. Others however will accept your notice and allow you to work until your last official day.
