  1. I think with all you have going on for your self, you are smart enough to know the answer to your own question.

If it helps any... if you are looking for a job on an actual "yacht" and by that, I mean a true 50 foot plus, luxuriously appointed, weathly owner's "yacht"... then I suggest that you dress as professionally looking as you can - in an outfit that goes really well with "boat shoes"...

And furthermore... be sure to wear street shoes to the boat, and carry your boat shoes in as small a bag as possible, that completely hides the shoes when they are in the bag.

The proper boarding etiquette would be to:  just before taking that last step from the dock to the boat - take out your boat shoes and slip them on, and put your street shoes in the bag... Keep the bag on your person (as you would a purse) until asked (given permission) to leave the bag in a specific location.

As to your attire... you can't go wrong when applying for a job -by wearing attire appropriate for the job you are applying for. So, dress as you would dress - if you were feeling really-really cheerful, happy and great - and it is your first day "on" the job - not an interview.

    Good luck, and

    Happy & Safe Boating!

  2. Men and women crew usually wear shorts, shirts with lapels and some kind of boat shoe. They dress professionally, but relaxed. All of the multi-million dollar yachts pretty much require that you leave your shoes at the dock or on the deck before you enter the boat. Socks or bare feet are normal so make sure you socks are absolutely sparkling clean and unstained. People hate smelly feet on multi-million dollar yachts. Your foot hygiene can literally decide your future on high end yachts.

I happen to know a few highly respected Newport yacht captains. They often bring their boats to San Diego for repair or major alterations.

If you like, you can email me your experience and I can ask around a bit.

Edit: Thumbs down for the guy with the connections?

              Strange.

  3. Yep, Youv'e got some good answers above. Always dress for "the part."

Now if you were interviewing to work on my yacht, How do you look in a bikini?

I'm just kidding really, my yacht is only 18' long, and I don't even require shoes!

Seriously, another thing you could do is ask some of your peers who have been "there, done that". You surely have some contacts who have made that trip, either male or female, who could help you out.

  4. Everything Captain John said, for a "real" yacht certainly (he put the cut at 50 tons, I'd put it at 100, but in any event something a billionaire or a corporation would own, as opposed to something a millionaire would own). It is likely that on a yacht like that you'll end up wearing a uniform, many yachts that size use a modified US Merchant Marine officer's uniform for all officers and crew (black slacks or shorts, white button-up shirt with epaulets). Do NOT show up wearing that, even though once you have your 100 ton license you're "legal" to.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a Mate position on a smaller yacht (ie, a good-sized privately owned vessel), you're probably fine with shorts, a polo shirt and topsiders.

  5. Earthlin....trust me, I know what you mean!!
