“I plan to play until I turn 40” – Alessandro Del Piero
Alessandro Del Piero recently gave an interview to Italian Media where he revealed he will play until the age of 40. “This is not the last year on my contract. I have so much football ahead of me. If I manage to stay healthy, I will play until the age of
40.”
Del Piero also revealed in an interview that he rejected several lucrative offers from big European clubs in order to stay in Turin. The idea is to finish his career with Juventus. Del Piero also talked about his ambitions after Juventus got relegated to
Serie B after the Calciopoli scandal. “I have achieved 70% of what I aimed for three years ago, now for the 30% we must make effort.” The Juventus skipper has made it public in the past that the ultimate objective is to win the Scudetto again.
Del Piero was then asked about the secret to his fitness. “A healthy regular life, internal peace, desire to play, high level of professionalism, individual physical training followed by time with personal trainer.” Del Piero has always been a model professional.
Despite his status and success, he has stayed humble and never let the success get to his head.
Del Piero was then asked if he would like to celebrate his fortieth birthday in front of the fans, Alex will turn 40 on November 9th, 2014. “IF my fitness remains, I will not have a problem playing for a couple of more years. It is useless to make
predictions at this point in time but my enthusiasm is still there and my head is clean, I can certainly see many more matches and a lot of goals before I retire.”
Del Piero wants to score his 300th club career goal in a Juventus jersey. The striker has managed to score 307 goals, if one counts the goals scored with the Azzurri and the U21 Italy squad. With the phenomenal fitness and the hunger the player
has, one must not bet against it.
Del Piero signed for Juventus in 1993, and has been playing for the club ever since. Seventeen years in the Bianconeri colours and the forward is still going strong. Last season, he managed to score nine league goals, despite suffering several injury setbacks.
The forward might not last the entire 90 minutes of a match but still possesses all the ability to lead his team in toughest of the fixtures. Juventus’ focus this season is to win a Champions League spot, and Del Piero’s form will be crucial in this regard.
The forward is a model for the youngsters to follow, and his influence on the youngsters coming up the Juventus youth ranks is an invaluable asset. Juventus hierarchy have already made it clear that they want the player to stay at the club in a non-player
role once he decides to hang up his boots.
