I planted a mum last spring that my son got me for mother's day, and it isn't even green yet?

I've never planted mums before, so I am wondering when they green up. I know they are fall flower here in PA. My son got it for me for Mother's Day; we planted it before it died last late Spring/early Summer, it grew to get 10 times its size and bloomed again in the Fall. I'm just wondering when mums green up. I guess I kind of thought I would see some green on it by now, but maybe I'm wrong. I am just hoping that it comes back because it was a beautiful mum with bright pink blooms on it.

Thanks for your help!

  1. As you know, Mums flower in the autumn.  Since it was in bloom at Mothers' Day, that means it was forced to bloom at an unnatural season.  Usually the forced ones are difficult to establish in a garden setting.

I wouldn't have high hopes that it will survive, thrive or bloom in your garden.  I would also leave it alone and see if it greens up next spring.  If it does---great!!  If it doesn't, dig it up then.

Wish I had a more optimistic fix for you.  Good luck!

  2. most mums are annuals.

  3. these are trouble plants...I had some that came back for three years..but this year they had no leaves up until last week and I pulled it out, most of the time the green leaves come by first week of june...if you want you could  wait and see , and if no leaves by the end of july, pull it out...you could remove some soil from around the root's,and jiggle it a bit and see what happends to it,if this would make it grow nice....good luck.
