  1. Yes I agree, all climbers need something to cling to while they get established. Trellis, chicken wire something like that.

  2. 2 varieties do not stick, but have tendrils.Henryana is one.You have to wire it.l would bin it and get boston ivy type etc which sticks beautifully.

  3. These plants need a little help before they get the hang of climbing. The simplest method to guide them on their way is to tape the shoots to the wall with small pieces of waterproof sticking plaster. Two pieces each stem, one being near the tip. In a few weeks you parthenocissus quinquefolia will be well away.

  4. do yourself a favour and don't encourage it!it will hold on to masonary, guttering and window frames, it will grow anywhere it chooses to and worst of all the ants love it and they use it to get into your house!!

  5. It's all in the name, Virginia "Creeper", it doesn't so much climb as creep. To get it growing vertical it has to have something for the tendrils to get a hold of.

Plug the wall at intervals and run a bit of garden wire up to the top. Once it has a hold of something solid there's no stopping it, though it's only in it's second year and will still be establishing its root system.
