Question:

I play club v-ball and hardly have sat the bench and never want to. I was the setter and still want to be.....

I really want to be a setter. I am "competing" against one of my friends to get the setter spot. I really want that spot, what can i do to get it. I need tips on attitude and strength. Also i need tips on how to condition myself at my home.

  1. If you want to work on something at home, I would really recommend footwork drills...or "Quick Feet" drills.  Google them.  They are drills where you move your feet in different ways (like back and forth over a line) quickly.  It helps get you faster and able to change directions at a moments notice, which is very needed as a setter in particular!

    Prove yourself to be a leader on the court because that's what the setter is, the quarterback on the volleyball team.  A good leader does not shout orders every two seconds, but encourages and helps their teammates, remains positive, works hard for everything and knows how to be a friend and have fun without getting goofy.  If you present yourself as a leader, it is just one more step at being the starting setter.

    Ask your coach if there is anything he or she wishes you to improve on.  Tell them you are looking forward to the season and you want to be an asset to the team and would like to know what else you can do to make yourself that much better.  

    Also, as a setter, it was always uncomfortable when your teammate was actively trying to out play you to take your spot on the court.  Treat it like a partnership and help each other out and work hard together.  You're coach will see who the team player is and who isn't.  And honestly, the teams that I was on that the setters worked together during practice, were the years that we had the most fun and learned/improved the most.

    To sum it all up, a loud and encouraging presence on the court, a positive work attitude, and quick feet will make you the starter!!


  2. Spill some water on the floor so your friend hurts herself.  Then you will surely get the position!  Good luck.

  4. You need a personal trainer to help you with your conditioning. It is not about training at home at this stage, as you want to get to a higher level.

    Competition is always a good factor of healthy sports, but watch out you don't want to hurt your friend simply to make the setter's spot available to yourself... you will regret the whole life.

    You do have the option to start your personal campaign and win some more attention from your coach... I don't want to go into politics here but you can judge your action.

    If your friend does better in those other categories that helped him/her get the setter's spot, say congratulations to him/her, and work harder with your club.

  5. I'm not a setter so with specific setting things I can't help. But as for the rest... Always make sure you have a positive attitude on the court, cheer on your teamates and push them to do better if they mess up.  Really take on a leadership role.  Also just get your basic fundamentals down, do your footwork and don't get lazy.  You said that you hardly sit the bench so this shouldn't be a problem for you.  For exercises work on your core, try doing some ab exercises they really help you all around.  Alsdo it helps to capitaliza on other areas besides setting such as serving, hitting, even passing.  It shows that you can go above and beyond and coaches like versatility.

  6. if ur competing, DONT SHOW OFF becuase u'll probably s***w up. while setting, always bend your knees nd PUSH when ur setting the ouside. if ur setting the middle, push up at a slight angle. and be alert for the ball. hope this helps. nd GOOD LUCK!

There's always a chance your coach will want two setters on the team.  But if that doesn't happen, set to yourself in your free time (after your homework, school, whatever).  Look for some private setting lessons.  That's what i did when i was competing for a middle blocker spot on my competitive team.

  8. i've been in this situation before..honestly, just focus on yourself and play YOUR game. dont worry about what your friend does and dont even think in your head that your friend is better than you. believe in yourself and tell yourself you are the better setter. have a positive attitude. when your coach tells you do something, take it into consideration and try not to get frustrated. have heart and show that you want the position more than anyone! you will be fine :]
