I produced my best but could not win gold medal at Olympics, says badminton star Lee Chong Wei
Malaysia’s badminton star in Men’s Singles category, Lee Chong Wei may have failed to win the final match against China’s Lin Dan at London Olympics but he produced his best throughout the tournament and at the ending points, luck just deserted him from
his first ever gold medal.
The World Number Two Chong Wei, who gradually improved his level of play with every match at Olympics, put up staggering performance in the final battle as well but failed to overpower his Chinese rival at the ending stage and was left in tears.
The Malaysian hero played remarkable badminton in the title match as he gave no chance to Lin in the opening set and won it but lost the following game with a big margin.
When many thought that he would not play fast in the final set considering his physical fitness but Chong Wei showed a great determination in the deciding game and was at the verge of victory when luck went against him and he lost with a tight margin.
While talking about his performance at Olympics, Chong Wei said that he grew stronger in all aspects of the game with every match.
He stated, “After the first match (against Ville Lang), my confidence was boosted and I resolved that I had to make the final. I am sorry I failed to win the gold but I tried my best.”
He further added, “This will be my biggest regret as my condition improved dramatically with each passing match. I took to the court against Lin Dan as confident as I had ever felt as I had nothing to lose. I felt no pressure as I didn't expect that I would
play as well as I eventually did in the Olympics.”
Despite losing the battle, Chong Wei cannot be blamed in any case whatsoever as he was even pretty doubtful of his participation in Olympics considering the intensity of his ankle injury.
But Chong Wei not only showed a steely determination of getting back on court ahead of Olympics but also made it to the finals and won a silver medal as well.
Nevertheless, Chong Wei announced that he will continue playing until 2014 and fans will have more meetings between him and Lin in the upcoming tournaments.
