I purchased a new Zenith

I purchased a new Zenith Tv and have hooked upmy dvd player which is about four years old (Toshiba). The connections are all right but when I put in any disk (I have tried many) it registers no disk so it is not reading the disk. The dvd player was working on my old TV. What is my problem? Do I have to buy a new DVD player?
