Electric trolling motors are designed to run on a deep cycle battery.

use your starting battery it will charge faster and save your deep for the many other acc. that you have running off it.

Why take the chance of running down your starting battery?  

Can you pull start your motor in an emergency?

Doubt it.

It doesn't matter that some guy might start up before he engages his windlass...what happens if a short occurs? Even without being used you can have battery draw-down as soon as the engine is turned off.

  

Secondly, ABYC standards don't want you putting multiple taps on a battery...your "Windlass" should be wired to a distribution panel. Failing a panel being used, make sure you have an adequated fuse inline and as close to the battery as possible. That would be your DEEP CYCLE battery.

Seriously...if you have two batteries...always leave the cranker alone so you can get home.

If you have a three way Battery switch I wouldnt think it would Matter.

I put one I my boat and I went off my eng running battery.

I always start  the engine before I retrieve it.

Set up a dual battery system with a Battery Switch.    Keep the starting battery separate.  The other battery should run the rest of the boat accessories, and the windless.    Install the windless with number 6  battery cable wire.  Solder all connections. Have it with at least a 50 Amp fuse in line.  Make sure the engine is running whenever you use the windless to send or retrieve the anchor.  It will draw a lot of amperage.  Check out the website for Good Windlesses at Goodwindless.com.  Good Luck.
