“I pushed for it for seven years, for the captain to be a selector” says Ponting – Cricket News Update
According to reports, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RT-Ponting-c2377, recently revealed that the former skipper spent a good lot of his captaincy period in arguing for a place on the selection panel to avoid communication barriers between players and the selectors.
From Australia’s proceeding Tour to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, Ponting recently said “I pushed for it for seven years, for the captain to be a selector, and it's a really positive thing for Australian cricket and certainly for our team. Any communication breakdowns in the
past could have been avoided if the captain was a selector. I know there was negativity 10-15 years ago about the captain and coach being selectors, but I think that could have been avoided with proper communication”.
Ponting went on stating that unlike hearing it from the official selectors, the players would feel more comfortable in receiving honest feedback from the team’s skipper and the coach who may able to guide them in a clearer manner, for instance, in areas
of improvement.
The modest Ponting also cited that his ambition to have a say in the selection panel aroused only after realising the fact that it was becoming difficult to communicate with players, not knowing what they had heard from the selectors.
With similar regard, in the past, previous Australian skippers have come under similar situations where it used to become too difficult to communicate with players regarding their exclusion from the team. An example could be cited from 1997’s instance where
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mark-Anthony-Taylor-c74540 who had been delivering a disappointing run as the Captain for Australia.
However, for Ponting’s part, one may not blame the Australian for revealing his desire since the former skipper had been on the squad during those times and witnessed all such events that had broken out into communication gaps between players and the selection
officials.
As a captain, Ponting is considered as one of the best skippers the country’s cricket will have. Spanning between 2004 and 2010, Ponting led side into 77 Test matches out of which he led the team into 48 wins, 16 losses and 13 draws.
