I put out some bird seed and now there is a rapidly growing green plant/grass stuff on the ground below the bird feeder. What is this plant and how do I get rid of it?

  1. Nearly every type of seed in birdseed will germinate - I have grown corn, sunflower, and millet from bird seed. Without seeing the leaves of your plants it is impossible to tell which it is. If you don't want them, just pull them up or mow over them.

  2. it is probably the plant of whatever seed you put down. That plus the bird doo fertilizing the ground below. Just pull it out if you don't want it.

  3. It's the plants that sprouted from the birdseed.

  4. I is probably Milo the little red seeds in the bird seeds. Broad leaf herbicide should get it and not harm your grass. My mother had to have a bird feeder and put in her flower bed. I tried to tell her what was going to happen so when she was out there on her hands and knees pulling Milo up I just walked out there with a cup of coffee and ask her how Milo farming was this year. She told me I was a smart ?'##.

Milo looks almost like corn when it first starts off. Long wide almost grass type leaves.

  5. YEP, I agree with all the other posters before me...just whatever is in your seed is gonna grow...I use a basic bird feed and it grows quite well under my feeder...

either move the feeder, or pull up the weeds as they come up

  6. It's probably the plant that the seeds come from... like sunflower seeds or thistle seeds. Just pull them up if you don't want them.
