  1. This happened to me once.  I just called the phone number on the IRS notice, provided the correct SSN and the problem was fixed on the spot.

  2. Did you go to the Internal Revenue website and look at it to find any directions that may apply to your situation and the form you have?  Site might be: internalrevenueservice.gov, or for a few bucks go to H&R block. It might cost $35 dollars. At least call, see if they can help without having  to go in. some government site has to have info. you can use. These are the only options I can think of.

  3. Just get a copy and file an amended return for the section which was incorrect. There are instructions for filing an amended return. Contact the IRS at their 800 number.

  4. If the only problem is that you put the wrong SSN on the form, DO NOT file an amended return! it can be fixed by a simple phone call. (You could go to a local office, but I don't reccommend that. This is because not all offices have personnell that are able to input adjustments. It's much faster to call).

Call 1-800-829-0922 and be prepared to give your child's full name, date of birth, and Social Security number. They will input an adjustment and any additional refund due will go out in about 2-3 weeks. Unfortunately, if the child qualified for the stimulas payment, you won't be receiving an additional $300--although you will be able to claim it on next year's tax return.

If the error on the return did not result in a change in your tax liability or amount of refund, and the child was 17 or older last year, there's no point in having the error corrected.

  5. You will need to start with your tax return as accepted by the IRS.  This means, the tax return without your son on it.  Since you don't have that, you might re-do the return without your son as a starting point.

Then, you need to print out Form 1040X as well as any schedules that relate to credits for your child (such as the Earned Income Credit, Child Tax Credit, Dependent Care Credit).

Fill out Form 1040X with the original return as accepted by the IRS, and the amended return the return you originally wanted to file.  Attach the related schedules, and mail it off.

If all this is more than you want to do, take your original return and the correspondence from the IRS to a commercial preparer and they will be able to do this in a few minutes for you.

  6. If you go to your closest IRS office and show them your sons social security card they can make a math error adjustment that will make filing an amended return un necessary.  This will cut processing time from 8-12 weeks for an ammended return to about 4 weeks.  And best of all it is much less complicated for you.

  7. file a 1040X with the correct ssn.

Basically you refile correctly and the replaces the one you sent.

There is no:  it was this and should be this.
