I know I used pleanty of screws. The other seams that arn't cracking I used the old tape that I put a layer of mud and tape over it. I didn't have a layer of mud under the adhesive tape.

  1. It may be that somebody was in a hurry and tried to mud it all at once, not in layers, How ever you re-do it, next time put a few drops of dawn dish soap in the mudpan, this will make the mud velvety smooth and will make it stick well while it is curing. An old painters trick I learned from my bro.

  2. duct tape or masking tape is a big no no.I hope you meant fiber glass tape,Just peel it right off . then mud any use paper drywll tape, it is really inexpensive.

  3. What do you man the old Tape?. you should use the paper tape that is specified for the job. Lots of screws do not help.We glue and then use minimal screws etc. How sound was the wall you put the all board on? cracking can also mean you were in to much of a hurry when you stopped the wall.

you must let each layer cure ist

  4. It sounds as if you may have used the figerlass self stick joint tape. If you used some other type of tape that was not intended for drywall then you have a problem. I have not heard of any of our drywall subs having a problem with mesh tape.

I like the paper tape because you get a good coat of mud in behind it on the bed pass, and then consecutive layers as you progress. It could be that the mesh tape was defective or old.

Dig out the bad joints and re-do with paper.
