Question:

I quit my job, can I get unemployment insurance (California)?

I am one the best employees according to my co-workers and supervisor.

I quit my job as a case manager of 2 years because I want to focus on getting into graduate school and find a job that would help me with my career path. I felt that quitting would be a catalyst for me to become a Neuropsychologist. Being a case manager is very stressful for me and because of the nature of the job I go home feeling too mentally drained to work on my major goals.

Would this reason help me get unemployment insurance? How could I re-word this reason to increase my chances of getting unemployment insurance? I feel that this is "good cause". Any response is very much appreciated.

  1. You are usually only eligible for unemployment if you were terminated. And technically you're not supposed to be eligible unless you were terminated for no fault of your own - for example if you were laid off due to a business downturn. If you are able to qualify for unemployment benefits, keep in mind that you must be looking for work every week or your benefits will be canceled.

That being said, it wouldn't hurt to visit EDD to find out if you are eligible for any benefits. Your better option might be to get your butt in school and see if you can get any financial aid. Even if it's technically too late in the year to apply, you should fill out the application because there may still be Pell Grant and/or Cal Grant money available and you may be eligible for student loans.

  2. Home insurance covers lots of different things. I'm not sure about California regulations, so I recommend you contact a local homeowners insurance agent. http://www.easyhomeinsuranceguide.com/Ca... They should be able to assist you.

  3. No. You have to be released by an employer ie. terminated, laid-off, etc..

  4. You cant reword the fact that you quit your job.  Getting unemployment requires you telling them why you are not working there anymore.

  5. Nope.   You're not going to get it.
