It looks like a couple of the Edward S. Gates have been pretty well documented...

Was he born in 1899 in Illinois?  If so, there are a few public family trees on Ancestry which show his parents as the Reverend Herbert W. Gates and Harriet Kirk.

Or if he was born on April 19, 1859, other public family trees show the parents as Ervine Gates and Mary Ellen Wilder.
