I re-potted my 16" avocado houseplant 2 weeks ago and the leaves are hanging way down.?

It is taking water but is otherwise looking bad. I thought it might be in shock but 2 weeks have passed. I'm not raising it for fruit, I just love this plant, can you help? Thank you.

Please check the soil. there should not be any air gaps between the roots and soil. Also ensure the water is seeping properly and soil is evenly wet. Also control the exposure to direct sunlight for a week. Slowly bring the plant in sunlight.

WATERING-THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Watering is a key factor in the successful growth of houseplants. Surprisingly, overwatering is more often a problem than underwatering in hampering this growth. Most plants are growing little if at all; consequently they need little fertilizer and less water than they needed when they were growing vigorously.

Too much water applied too often means the soil will stay saturated for long periods, causing the roots imbedded in the waterlogged soil to begin to rot and die. Avocados are particularly susceptible to root rot. With their roots gone, plants wilt as if they're parched; as a result these plants won't perk up when they're watered. If the soil is kept saturated with water, it contains no air so the roots can't function and will eventually rot.

Some plants are exceptionally susceptible to damages caused by overwatering. These plants include avocados.

Using pots with drainage holes in the bottom is the first step in avoiding watering problems. The holes allow excess water to drain out of the soil; the excess water should be discarded so it isn't absorbed back into the soil.

The potting mix is one of the most important factors, when growing avocados as a houseplant. It should allow drainage and be light rather than heavy. Watering from above(recommended), the water should be added until some comes out the drainage holes. Let the water run through 3 times, and allow it to drain thoroughly! Never allow your avocado to remain sitting in water. Water only once every 2-4 weeks.

Another mistake in watering is to constantly give the plant small amounts of water, such as a cupful. This will actually allow the rootball to dry out, and no nutrients from our recommended water soluble fertilizer can get to it. Furthermore, it will kill the plant, but it's death will just take a longer time! Never give your avocado small amounts of water as described above.

Finally, relax and enjoy your new avocado houseplant! The more you worry about it, the more you'll have a tendency to fuss over it and actually 'kill it with kindness', by.......overwatering!

The Gillogly Avocado Planting and Growing Instructions READ CAREFULLY!

The Gillogly Avocado is a vigorous housplant or, once established, can be grown out of doors in more temperate climates. In any case the plant you receive must be transplanted right away to a one or two gallon pot. Please follow these simple planting instructions:

1. Prepare a one or two gallon container by filling half way with cactus mix potting soil. Be sure the pot has adequate drainage holes.

2. Carefully cut the plastic bag, remove it from the plant and set the plant into the half filled pot and sift potting soil around the root ball tamping carefully to assure there are no air spaces left around the root ball. The planting height should allow the seed to be exposed above the soil level.

3. Water thoroughly to settle the soil. Refill the pot if it has settled too much or carefully raise the plant if it is planted too deep. Water again to finally settle the plant.

4. The Gillogly Avocado should be grown in a sunny window or outdoors in frost-free areas. ( But give it sun only gradually, protect it at the beginning, shade it).

5. Water deeply every 6 weeks to leach accumulated salts from the root ball. Be careful not to keep the plant too wet as avocados require oxygen to their roots as well as water.

6. Fertilize with each watering(every 6 weeks)according to directions on the fertilizer package.

7. To make a smaller or denser growing plant, occasionally pinch the tips of the top or branches of the plant.



After one year the Gillogly Avocado should be transplanted to a 3 to 5 gallon pot or planted outdoors in frost-free areas. Be sure to select a spot in the full sun with good internal soil drainage.

EXTRA PRECAUTIONS

1. THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO WITH AN AVOCADO IS OVERWATER IT. (IT WILL KILL IT!!!)

2. AVOCADO TREES MAY BE IN DIRECT SUN, BUT THIS MUST BE DONE VERY GRADUALLY.

JUST LIKE PEOPLE,THEY WILL SUNBURN!

3. BE CAUTIOUS IN YOUR USE OF FERTILIZER. MORE IS NOT BETTER.

4. BE SURE TO USE CACTUS MIX POTTING SOIL, AS HEAVY SOIL COULD CAUSE THE PLANT TO DROWN.

5. LEAVE THE RUBBERBAND ON THE TREE, IT WILL DISINTEGRATE AND FALL OFF ON ITS OWN.

6. WHEN TRANSPLANTING THE TREELET TO A ONE OR TWO GALLON CONTAINER, BE SURE TO STAKE IT FOR STRONG AND UPRIGHT GROWTH.
