Read a lot of Alan Moore's work lately, aren't there other great comic writers?

  1. I haven't read these yet, but I've heard Frank Miller's "Sin City" is excellent, so is the movie with Bruce Willis as Marve. Frank Miller also wrote "300," obviously popular due to its recent film rendition. He even did a "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns," but we probably have yet to see that shown on the screen. Another story he did was "Ronin," and if you're in the mood for exiled samurai in Edo Japan, you may want to consider that one too.

  2. Maus by Art Spiegelman .

  3. 30 Days of Night

  4. Great comics writers? Yeah, just about anything from these guys is worth reading

    Neil Gaiman

    Grant Morrison

    Warren Ellis

    Kurt Busiek

    Mark Waid

    Brian K. Vaughan

Moore's just a lot denser than most writers, and people tend to read and write comics for entertainment, so not everyone goes for the same sort of stuff he does. For the most similar to Moore, look into Gaiman and Morrison, particularly their series Sandman and The Invisibles.

There's other excellent writers out there, too, like Garth Ennis and Frank Miller and Mark Millar, but a fair amount of their work is violence with no small amount of immaturity to it (not that that's not entertaining, it can just be a little juvenile at time). And there's other writers like Jeph Loeb, Brian Michael Bendis and Ed Brubaker who can write some great stuff, but they've also had a few misses.

On the indie comics scene, you have great guys like Phil Hester, Alex Robinson, Johnathan Hickman, Harvey Pekar.

If you want specific titles, I wholeheartedly recommend Gaiman's Sandman and Ellis' Fell as books that just about anyone will enjoy. For arguably the best Superman story ever, get Busiek's Secret Identity.
