i think you should go to ikea and look around.

what kind of feeling you want in a room?

green, pale walls, a pretty whit table, a picture of a painted leaf, and a couch of a different shade of green.

you can go white, you can go antique.

buy the furniture, go to home depot and buy the paint.

i renovated my room. i bought white and oak furniture with a canopy. my father painted my walls lavender. and added a dim but bright light, and a painting.

so go

read a catalog, choose it. buy it.  enjoy it.

Start with the room that needs the most work.  Is your kitchen or bathroom unbearable?  Start there.  Make lists, which fixtures are staying, which need to go.  Check pricing on parts, supplies etc, and set a budget.

I guess it all depends on your idea of major renovation.  Are you taking down walls, or just replacing fixtures and appliances?

Take care of things that will prevent further deterioration first such as repairing a roof to prevent leaks and rot.  Fix windows and doors to save on heat and cooling costs.  Same thing with adding insulation.  You can learn to do some of these things yourself.  As far as decorating goes paint and spackle go a long way to brightening and renewing a home.  Unless you have deep pockets use your money wisely and you can do it.
