You cant go to Lygon and not have Italian.

Universal and Totos are the ones I always go to but they will be packed on Friday if that's a problem.

There will always be places hardly full so you really dont have to book ahead you can walk down the strip get hassled by waitresses to dine at there place and settle for whatever you feel like. Usually if you go to somewhere with few people you'll get offered (or you can ask for) a discount or a free bottle of wine etc.

There's a place called Minzaman on 292 Lygon Street which does really yummy Middle Eastern food. They have shisha too. On Friday nights and Saturday nights, there's a belly dancer! You can check out the menu at http://www.minzaman.com.au/home.html

What a great place to go out to eat. Unfortunately I do not know your budget. So I suggest that you walk along the street and check out a few restaurants and their prices. In Lygon street you must have Italian, that is the authenticity of the street. I live in North Melbourne and go to Lygon street quite often to eat. You only have to look at the customers and to spot a good place, a lot of the places have outdoor dining so when you are checking out the prices you can also see what the people are being served, look at their faces are they happy or are they complaining are they clicking their fingers trying to get a waiters attention, what is the atmosphere of the restaurant (do you like loud music in the background or some nice soft classical). Really you can not go to wrong in Lygon Street for a good restaurant. But please make sure you go to an Italian restaurant. If you want Middle Eastern food go to Sydney road.
