I really need alternatives to hurting myself!!! please help?

when i get stressed, angry, sad, frustrated, or a combination of these, i end up hurting myself. i light a match, wait until the tip gets red-hot, and then blow it out and dig it into my skin. i know that its bad for me and i need to stop. also people are starting to notice all of the little marks.

please, does anyone know any alternatives to hurting myself, like an easy relief of stress or something? i really need something else.

and please people, dont say masturbation or drugs. those two are not options.

  2. just find little things that distract you until you calm down, like draw or go for a jog. when you're feeling those emotions, you get a lot of energy, and you hurting yourself is a way to release it. try doing something you enjoy instead. for long term solutions, talk to friends, family, a counselor. it may seem dumb or like they don't care, but trust me, they do.

  3. i used to kinda have the same problem only with cutting myself.. silly i know..  i actually go on medication for it [but honestly... they could be feeding me tic-tacs and i wouldn't know the difference.. it's all mental]  sometimes i'll just get right in the shower if i can.. and sorta take my mind off things and just 'wash' away the pain... no pun intended...  but i'll go online maybe and take a myspace survey or something to really occupy your mind and sorta drift away..  really its hard to break the habit of this.. but once you start to realize how causing yourself pain was just hurting yourself and maybe even others, it makes it easier to stop.  please find a way to better yourself :]

  4. I would have to go with exercising.  You're still hurting yourself, but it's constructive.  Make sure you learn how to exercise first so you don't REALLY hurt yourself.

  6. hit a pilllow. or wear a rubber badna nd snap it. OR get into a sport.

  7. Excercise. Turn your negative energy into a power booster. Turn up your ipod and go for a run. That will give you endorfins and make you happier too! You should also talk to someone. A good friend, a counsilor or family memeber.

    when i get stressed i chill out and exercise.

    excercise releases endorphins and makes you happy :]

    google different techniques to releasing endorphins. i know you dont want to hear it, but having an o****m works.

  10. Exercise. It will get you in shape and the endorphins will boost your mood. It's also a good outlet. Try boxing at the gym too.

  11. You need counseling.   Hurting oneself by causing physical pain is a not good way to relieve the emotional pain.

    Talk to a teacher whom you can trust.

  13. hi sweety, there are lots of things you can try but only you will know after trying them if they will work for you.

    Try holding an ice cube in your hand as it is so cold it feels its burning.

    try putting an elastice band on your wrist and when you are stressed just ping it so that it stings but any marks made wont stay long.

    if you dont want to hurt yourself which is the best way but not always so easy to jump straight into you could try

    writing poetry, write down your emotions, i have over 250 poems now and some of them are very touching to read 7 years on.

    paint, even if it doesnt make sense its a release which is why you are harming yourself.

    shout into pillows, buy a punch bag

    take u a gym membership and run it out, or a yoga class etc something where you are with other people and you are releasing energy and taking your mind off burning yourself.

    i really hope you get some ideas from here and book to see a professional, if i think of any more i can mail you if you like?

    Never mind~ the poster of this Q has realised they have a problem and thats hwy they are asking for 'safer' ways of harming, anyone that isn't emo and self harms will know that its a medical known fact that self harm is a form of release and releases endorphines and adrenaline. But its also an addiction and is not always easy to just STOP!

    There is a big difference between emo's and 'real' self harmers.

    I dont disagree that the poster needs to get better but this isnt something you can just wake up and stop, it has taken me a long time to know that i wont turn back.

    alot of schools have counsellers etc so maybe you could talk to a trusted member of staff and ask for some help, and your parents need never know hun, as for not being able to get out to run etc, why dont you take up some lunch time clubs like trampolining or something as thats great fun.

  14. You should buy a punching bag at wal-mart. Let me tell you, this will really relieve all your stress! I think you should also try to confide in someone with your feelings.

  15. I've heard of a method used in anger management that might help. You sound like you have a compulsive disorder in other words you NEED to hurt yourself or at least that's what your brain is telling you. Try putting a rubber band around your wrist and when you get upset snap it, it will sting for a little and doesn't cause any severe damage. I also suggest you see your doctor who might be able to give you medical advice.

    You could also read a book or chew gum.  You could also get commited.  Instead of hurting yourself, you should hurt objects.

  18. If you really want to hurt yourself, consider taking up a hobby in which you get to hurt other people. Martial Arts is a good example. Any sports are also a good example.

    I swear if you also workout (run, jog, etc) if you do it often, you will not feel the need to do that. For instance if your feeling bad, if you take a mile run, you will be too tired and have too many endorphins to want to hurt yourself.

  19. Talk to a counselor so you can get it out emotionally.

    Hit a pillow, go running, or kick a ball around to get it out physically.

    I also read in a book that you can take negative feelings and channel them in to something creative. Like if you're really in the heat of the moment, paint or write a song. It's creative AND better than hurting yourself or someone else.

  20. Have you tried writing poetry, or just writing all your feelings and frustrations down, like a letter to someone or just rambling? I do that and it helps a lot, I can get it off my chest when I feel it's something I can't share with anyone else.

  21. Try squeezing a squishy ball, or hang out with your friends and talk to them about your problems. They won't laugh at you, and you won't want to hurt yourself around them.

  23. Take a martial art, study for any school work you might have.  Try reading a good book.

  26. Well i do agree with getting a councilor but one way that your could put this to good use is to start running and ill tell you why. When your run long enough and hard enough, your heart as you may know pumps harder and puts oxygen into your body, but sometimes it can not keep up, to put it simply it creates a shortage of oxygen to your brain making your feel high, this is called, strangely enough a runners high, I am not quite sure if this is what your looking for and oh, this can in no way hurt you or your brain, i know this for a fact and if for some strange reason it does(which it won't) I am not liable LOL.

  31. I write. I had some bad things happen in my past, and one of my teachers introduced me to writing and I've been doing it ever since. It's really therapeutic.
