Question:

I really need golf help

I just started trying to learn to play golf today, so I went to a driving range. Most of the time when I hit the ball it goes way off to the right and I couldn't figure out how to stop doing that. It's not that I am swinging too hard or anything. Any thoughts on what I am doing wrong? Any tips would be appreciated. I'd like to be able to go play a game of golf within a few weeks.

  1. When your ball goes straight right its called a slice. A good way to fix this is get your right shoulder(if your are right handed) out of the way, give yourself lots of room on your backswing. Once you do that your clubface should be square when you come to the ball.

  2. You are getting stuck. Basicallly your arms are behind your body through impact and you can't square the clubface. You need to stop sliding your hips toward the target and turn torso instead so your arms can swing freely and square the clubface. Good Luck

  3. Simon, if you are just beginning to play golf today, went to the range,  hit balls and expect to play in a few weeks, you will experience a most frustrating and disappointing golf game.  Doing what you are doing and establishing all the bad habits in your swing will set you back a lot even if you decide to take lessons later.

So..best way as a beginner is to seek out a professional golf professional at any of your local golf courses and start taking lessons.  Believe me...I did it your way a long time ago, and it still remains true...it is the wrong way.  When I decided I wanted to be  better and not be embarassed when I played with clients or friends, I went to my local golf course and started taking lessons.  That was over forty years ago, and even having layed off for a number of years and started playing again, I went back and took lessons.

Just go into the pro shop and visit with one of the pros and see what happens.  This is a freebie...and if you decide to take lessons, it isn't all that costly. You still might start playing in a few weeks...but off to a better start.  And when you play a round, I'' bet your golf pro will want to know how you played, so he can work with you better. Try It!!!

  4. When everyone first starts out playing golf they all hit to the right.  One thing you can try and do is try roll your wrists over just before you hit the ball, (like tennis players top spin shots).

The best thing you can do is book in for a lesson with a pro, that will help A LOT!

    Good luck!

  5. There are actually several swing flaws that could be causing this...the best advice is lessons from a teaching Pro.  You'll be amazed at what the results will be.
