I will follow that [treatment] which, according ability and judgement, I will consider for the benefit of my patients, and abstain from whatever is harmful. i will give no deadly medicine to anyone if asked, nor suggest any such [advice]....

Who was Hippocrates, and what was he promising to do?

  1. i'd say ask a history teacher, or google it, try a library subject search, or wikipedia, sorry but that is truly all i can do, good luck finding out :)


  2. plainly nobody can promise anything, even Hippocrates. We're only human, even if the medicine is not deemed deadly the patient can still have things that go wrong that were unnoticed by patient and doctor and any advice that a doctor gives can do two things 1) create tension in the patient to overdo or do less because one is afraid of death or cares little for his or her life, perhaps forgets and 2) puts the doctor at obligation, responsibility for a patients death and well-being in which not all doctors care to assert their whole life's worth of time, money and energy to cure.
