  1. Remember this, the order of operations.

Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction

So first you do what is in the parenthesis (5-1)= 4, then do the multiplication 4*3=12, then do the division 28 divided by 12 = 2.33 with a bar over the 33 because it keeps repeating 2.333333333.

    Does that help?

    (P)lease= (P)arenthesis

    (E)xcuse= (E)xponents

    (M)y= (M)ultiplication

    (D)ear= (D)ivision

    (A)unt= (A)ddition

    (S)ally= (S)ubtraction

  2. (5-1) * 3 becomes 4*3 when you get rid of the brackets.

    4*3 is 12

28/12 can be simplified to 14/6, then to 7/3, then to "2, remainder 1"

your answer is any of "2 and a third.", "2.3 recurring", "7/3" or "2, remainder 1" depending on the format requirements of your answer
