So I've actually been playing volleyball for a while and i'm really good. The only problem is my serving skills. I serve alright but i want to serve really powerful this year. I know that weights help and i took a weight lifting class in school but my upper body strength sucks. I added muscle but i can't seem to hit the ball like i want to. And when i do hit the ball powerful it seems to go pretty close to the net. I'm 5 feet and 4 inches (a little shorter than the net is) and it goes straight ahead. and I was wondering if anyone had some good tips on how to give a powerful overhand serve.

  1. im your height and ive played for a few years and my overhand has gotten really good.

when you hit the ball, try to aim it higher. you mentioned that it goes straight, so instead of hitting the ball straight on, hit it at an angle so that it goes in a more upward position.

it helps me if i flex the whole time that im practicing my serves. When i was first working on serving, i stood a good ways away from a high wall and i served back and forth from the wall, the force helped me build a little more strength and it helped me get ready for playing on the court.

    hope this helps!

  2. im only going into 8th grade but im actually i really great server i love it but to answer your question 1st of all keep your wrist stiff

    2. swing through as soon as you hit the ball dont just stop swing through and hit your thigh

    3. use your legs legs really help so take a step and go into the ball

    4. make sure you trow it in the same spot everytime

    5. remeber to hit the ball with the palm of yout hand.

    6. do lots of pushups you need it for you shoulders and arms.

    7. you can also try to put coins on your elbow where it is bended up then try to go down fast and catch the coins this heps with your speed you need alot of speed the more speed in your arm the better!

    8. last but not least have fun and dont give up!

  3. For me what helped me with my serve was working on my toss. I could never get the toss right. It would always go behind me. So my advice is to practice your toss.

  4. its okay, im your height and i have extremely weak upper body strength (the carnival games when you hammer the target to ring the bell...i can get 5 at best lol) but i have been able to get over hand serves. here are some tips

    1. make sure (if youre a righty) you start with all of your weight on your right foot, with left in front (as in its further away from your body)

    2. get your toss high, so when you hit it, your arm is not bent at all. and your toss should be in front of you, that way when you hit, your weight/energy is pushing forward.

    3. step into your left foot while hitting the ball, that way your weight is helping you hit the ball forward.

    4. hit the ball around the area of your wrist, while your arm is straight...not bent

    5. hit it at an angle, or keep your body at an angle so it wont go straight

    hope i help!=]]

  5. ok i have a few tips. i hope they help

1)follow through after you serve. dont stop right after you hit it

2)take a power step.(just step back and toss it slightly in front of you and take a step and hit it)

3)make sure you are hitting it with the palm of your hand

4)and last make sure your not having to go backwards to hit it.

and just alot of practice will help :D
