I'd appreciate some help on this - my family would like to take my husband out for his birthday this week to a restaurant in philly or the area. We are looking for something with a nice classy environment (good for taking pictures) or a beautiful outdoor area along with good food. Price isn't such an issue since it is a one time affair. We like all types of cuisines - I just want to make sure the food is really good and that it is a really nice environment.

I've tried so many restaurants and don't want to go to ones we have already tried together such as alma, brasserie perrie, devon seafood, pod, jones, rouges, roys, fogo de choa, capital grille...

Any suggestions?

  1. rose tattoo, cuba libre, marakesh all have really cool decorations. marakesh is awesome is like moroccan food. you sit around a brass table/plate on couches and they serve you a 7 course meal (you get to pick the main dishes) and i think its a set price at $28

  2. Go to swanky bubbles they have great food, drinks and the environment is nice, you'll have a great time there. Its located on Front Street between chestnut and market.

    or

Cube Libra on 2nd Street between market and chestnut, you can salsa dancing, good food and drinks, as well as nice environment

  3. The Mosholu has fantastic food.  You can have drinks up on deck (they have live music) and then eat in the ship below (I recommend getting a riverside table).

  4. Try Osteria (Mark Vetri & Jeff Benjamin's 2nd restaurant) they have an enclosed patio dining area and the food is phenomenol (voted best restaurant in Philadelphia Magazine.) But your timing is kinda close. I reccommend calling a month in advance for weekend reservations because it fills up very very quickly.

Or how about Lacroix at the Rittenhouse. It overlooks Rittenhouse Square. The food along with the decor are both stupendous.

  5. Amada is still one of the best restaurants in the City...2nd or 3rd and Chestnut I think.

Also, you could try Osteria (Broad and Mt. Vernon...just off of 676) or Vetri (owned by the same person).  Both are Italian, though I believe Vetri to be the higher end of the two.  If you go to Osteria, there are some pretty decent bars in the area, particularly, St. Stephen's On Green at 17th and Green (about 4 blocks away from Osteria).  Just a few blocks west of there (towards the Art Museum) is the Belgium Cafe, which is Monk's second location basically.

Two other places I liked were Mercato and Melagrano.  Both are Italian BYO's, but they're also kind of small.  They're both in good areas, especially if you're looking to hang out for awhile afterwards though.

  6. 1919 at the Bellevue Hotel is very pretty.

  7. try scouting around in chinatown. the menus are varied and range from basic to upscale in atmosphere. after dining, there are many other places to go, including the cultural center, gift shops, markets, and newstands. have a nice time!
