I shoot in the high 90's, low 100's. I am using a crappy set of clubs with graphite shafts. I'm 30 and I've been told I should probably get steel shafts. I really want to start improving my game (shooting in the 80's and beyond). I want to get new clubs but I should probably take a lesson or two? What should I do first and why?

  1. club fitting first then lessons then club fitting when you buy just to make sure you haven't improved enough to warrant better clubs

  2. lessons  then custom fit clubs

  3. I'd recommend the new clubs first as well.  Ideally, your first step should be to select your teaching pro, sit down with him/her and as part of the entire process include a club fitting session, purchase and lessons all as a package deal.  You'd probably save yourself a little money that way.

  4. I personally would buy the clubs first.  You don't want to take lessons with you old clubs and then buy new ones.  Even the slightest difference with the new clubs could throw off your swing.  This is just my opinion and how I would go about it.

  5. Absolutely get a fitted set of clubs first. A poorly fit set of clubs (which is probably what you are using) could potentially make the ball go left, right, too high or too low. And guess what? A bad swing can do the same thing, and it's very difficult to tell which is the problem if you do not have properly fitted clubs. Getting the clubs first will allow you to isolate and fix your swing problems, and you will be able to improve much faster.
