Question:

I really need some advice about getting out of a lease...

I moved to Saint Paul, MN because of a job, but because of timing constraints, I signed a lease for an apartment via mail because I didn't have enough time to actually look at the area. I am regretting my decision and I need to move out. I do not feel safe in the apartment and the surrounding areas. This is only my second day here but I know that I have to move out immediately. I was foolish and naive when I signed the lease blindly and it is my fault. I don't know what to do. If anyone has any advice, it would be appreciated. Thank you.

  1. If you signed a lease, you're responsible for that lease. All you can do is talk to the landlord and appeal to their charitable side (but don't expect to get anywhere -- this is YOUR fault, not THEIRS). You can abandon the lease (by breaking it), but you're STILL liable for the remaining months on that lease.

NO ONE is that constrained by time that you can't manage to actually LOOK at places before you sign anything. You should have looked for places that rented month to month until you found something that suited you better. You could have contacted an apartment-finding agency (they don't charge residents to search for apartments).

Sorry, you signed it, you own it.

  2. Read your lease agreement front to back.  There is probably a fine for breaking a lease, but if it's that important to you, you'll pay it and get out of there!
