Early this morning I was watching tv and it was clear then I turn my head to the computer and then back at the screen and it was black the whole tv screen except one thin line in the middle that shows what playing. You can hear the show but you just cant see it do anyone know what I should do. I have a Laker game coming on later today and I really want to watch it.

  1. Only thing you can do now is go to the shop to get it fixed.

  2. The crt is shot.  Time for a new set,  it is not worth replacing.

  3. The set lost vertical deflection.  This can be repaired at a TV repair shop.

With the transition from analog to digital less than a year away, you probably ought to consider the repair costs vs. replacing it with a new set.  After all it is 17 years old!

  4. I don't know a ton about electronics, so I might be wrong... But it sounds to me that the tube is fried. It's old and to be expected.

  5. The fault is loss of vertical deflection as already  mentioned by RT. It is a routine run of the mill repair for any Tv Tech, it should only attract reasonable to low cost as it could just require the vert amp chip re soldering ( very common ) the vert amp chip cost is only about $10 so labour would be the greatest cost. If you can get the set to a repair shop near you with little trouble then by all means take and ask for estimate.

Now Brian ---You aught to be shot !!!

Hollie   --------You aught to be fried !!!!

    Cheers Pete
