I am a 32 year old married female with four years experience in the field. also have 180 hours PTO a year and total coverage benefits. I work at a group home for people with developmental disabilities in So. California. The job is pretty kick back and fun but I've also been attacked once (not bad) The 2 previous years my raises have been 7%, this past week, I got my three year review and got a 4%! Does this sound like okay compensation for this type of work? Or am I getting shafted...

  1. i think it's a decent salary, but i live in south georgia where the cost of living is not as high, so i don't really know...

  2. My friend makes $15/hr full time, NO EXPERIENCE doing the same thing.

    Ask for more!!!

  3. That's over $34,000 per year in salary based on a 40 hour work week,  but it sounds like you have great benefits - over 4 weeks paid time off per year, insurance coverage, a fun work environment, good raises.  Although for Southern California it sounds low, you have to consider the value of the benefits.  Also, are you working for a non-profit company?  If you are you won't get as high a salary as elsewhere.  Why don't you check with other companies that provide similar services and find out how much they pay.  If your company is competitive, then it is a good salary for the job.

  4. Typical raises in the southern California market for hourly employeeds are currently between 3-4%.  4% is on the high side.  Not unusual or insulting assuming there are no special circumstances that you didn't mention.

  5. I made $15/h as a 15 year old male in construction so $16.62 doesn't sound like much to me...

...then again construction isn't exactly "kick back and fun"

  6. Hard to say- in my area of the country $16.62 per hour is okay, not great.  But Calif. is so much more expensive to live in- (I used to live in Burbank)- it seems like it would be hard to get by on??  Course the benefits for working part time is a big plus.

  7. getting paid that much for a 'kick back and fun' job is very good. especially for a job you didn't go to collage for.

as for your one attack....well i have a friend who is a porter in a hotel, a big party place. one of the harder aspects of his job was helping drunks to their rooms. he was attacked one night...only glanced by a punch from some drunk....but he told his boss...and on my advice suggested self defence training to the director. quoting a very expensive lesson price in the same breath. the director instead gave all the people with his job title a rise. still cheaper for him than the classes. but more than my friend would have gotten otherwise....perhaps you could try it.

  8. Yeah, thats really good!

Espically with benefits and its relaxation!

  9. for so. cal., someone your age should be making much more than that.  then again i dont really understand your job so maybe it just pays nothing to begin with.

  10. You're getting more than most in this type of position.  You've got really good PTO as well.  The economy is such that they are being careful.  Remember, if they have to close or lay people off, you could be making $0 per hour.

  11. It's probably about as much as you are going to get. I doubt that working elsewhere doing the same thing would pay much more.

  12. That sounds OK...actually 4% is a little better than average raise.

  13. Not exactly shafted, Lara, but you deserve more if you are working in CA where the COL is higher.  One important thing...do you work with severe schizophrenics?  If you do, ask for more or leave soon...it's not enough.  Mike, PsycTechAtascadero

  14. YOU CAN BE SAVING OR MAKING MONEY MY SISTER HAS A GREAT COMPANY THAT SAVES YOU MONEY BY GETTING A BETTER PLAN IN TECHNOLOGY YOU ALREDY USE FOR LESS OR SHE CAN HELP YOU MAKE MONEY . DONALD TRUMP SPONSERS US AND HE IS THE RICHEST MAN IN U.S ITS REALLY WORTH IT AND IF YOUR INTERESTED I CAN EXPLAIN MORE TO YOU LET ME KNOW

  15. Nah, you're good.  I'll tell you what to do though...this is good advice no matter WHAT field you are in...

FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE WORTH!

Do a little research, look for similar jobs and even apply for them.  Find out up front what they are offering.  If the offer is higher, mention it to your employer "hey, I got a job offer from XYZ and it was 3 dollars more, isn't that weird?  Do you think I should take it"

See what happens.  You don't know if you don't try.

  16. Sounds good to me

  17. thats around 3257$ a month if yourk work full-time 7 hrs monday to friday

  18. A 4% pay increase would barely be considered an adequate cost-of-living increase in most states.  You might ask if your increase was both cost-of-living and performance related or one or the other.  4% is good, not great.

  19. You mentioned nothing about the job duties or what it is you do exactly. 16 is good for me.

  20. I think it's fair  considering the economy just thank God you have a decent paying job I wouldn't complain

  21. sounds fair to me.
