  1. A lot of parts are expensive, but you can find good deals. No matter what the cost it is a spectacular city that is so diverse and filled with amazing things to do.

  2. I want to do the opposite and move over to Australia. New York is very expensive specially if you want to live in like manhattan.

  3. Most people think of New York as Manhattan, but it's actually a vast sprawling metropolis. You can't afford to live in Manhattan.  In fact, no one can.  The "people" who live there are cyborgs built for the pleasure of capitalist robber barons (or they're old and have an insanely great rent control deal).  It's hard to say if you'd really want to live in the Bronx or the outskirts or Brooklyn.  A lot of people do, but no one particularly cares what they think.

New York can be fun to visit, but if you plan to do anything like eat or drink or visit places, then yes, it can be very expensive. If you try to go to New York and live cheaply, it's utterly exhausting.  Yes, the pizza is fantastic, especially if you've just left a bar which closed at  the civilized hour of 4am.  But by the third week of your pizza slice diet, you might find yourself craving greens...

I've found that New Yorkers are extremely friendly. Helpful, easy to talk to, great sense of humor.  However they have absolutely no time for you, and if you are slowing them down in any way, they will abuse you. Verbally, mentally, etc etc.  Do not stop on the sidewalk.  Ever.

If you know people in New York, you can truly have the best time of your life.  If you don't know people, it can be the  coldest mountain of stone on the planet.  So like most things, it kind of depends.

Overall, New York is great.  If you're rich. Living in an East Village loft, walking down to your choice of great cafes every morning, taking the subway to the best art and music in the world every at night...  What could be better!  So if you happen to be a trust fund millionaire with a hot real estate hook-up, get yourself to New York, pronto!
