I really want a rat I heard they are the best rodent companion to get and I always wanted one. I owned many hamsters as well and loved them all. The only problem is my mom can't stand rats, she thinks they're disgusting and hates their tail. How can I convince her that they aren't "disgusting" and will make a great pet?

  1. They're actually better and smarter than most rodents, and not nippy.....so the tail is hairless, who cares?  They're not like the wild ones. Show her the pictures here, and check out the "Home" page:

This also has some cute photos to click on, also click on "rat pictures" above them for more:

  2. I have a rat and she is a lot to take care of. You have to clean her cage like once a week and you have to always show her love. Its going to take a lot of convieing to get rat. My mom was the one that wanted the rat because she likes them but unfortunently your mom hates them. Tell her your pay for everything and take care and she doesn't have to worrry about a thing.

  3. Tell her rats tails have 3000 hairs per square inch, just like a human's body. If she could stand to have a baby and touch its "disgusting" human arms and legs and body, then she can stand a rat's tail.

BTW, rats should always have a companion rat. Unless you plan to sleep in the cage with the rat and groom it with your tongue, you can't replace the companionship she'll need from a second rat.

  4. rats. no offence but they arent worth the time in my opinion. you have to clean thier cages every day or everyweek depending on how big the cage is, you have to devote ALOT of time to them otherwise they get vicious, you cant take them on walks, you cant have them out in your living room or they will escape under your floorboards, and p**p behind sofas, they dont live very long, they are nocturnal and make alot of noise during the night when you are trying to sleep, and the list goes on and on.

my grandad bought me a rat when i was 6 when i asked for a bet. whe has called tom and he lived for 3 years. he ended up contracting some sort of disease because he was stupid enough to eat his wooden house i bought for him.

we got a real pet when i was young. A DOG. then we got another real pet, a cat and in my opinion cats are the best pets. they dont need to be walked, many people who viviut you will find you cat adorable, they can be taught tricks, they provide you with hours and hours and years and years of companionship, they dont get lost easily (ie beneath the floor etc) they wil live a happier life then a pet locked in a cage its whole life, if they have free run of the house, they eat spiders, and most insects because they are full of vitamins so if you see a spider on the wall, dont be alarmed, point to it, and the cat will catch it. trust me, they will, all 4 of my cats do this =D

cats also spend 50% of thier waking hours cleaning themselves so they are very hygenic, i suggest getting a cat because you mother will lke how hygenic they are, they are very independent (dont need to be checked incase they are pulling thier fur out everyday, or the cage cleaned, or bedding replaced etc) and lastly, you can get them for free at your local humane society.

  5. I would make a presentation on Power Point to show that rats aren't disgusting but are good companions and intelligent. Try looking at programs that might tell you interesting facts about rats and then show them to your mom. If you can't get a rat, would you try getting a mouse? I have a mouse and he is fun to have around.

  6. my mom totally hates rats too (shes freaked out b y the tail and everything like ur mom), when i was at the pet store getting my hamser wich was next to the rats she couldnt look at them until she took a glance and they were running in their wheel and having fun she started laughing and didnt mind the rats that much so maybe just showing ur mom the rats and how cute and funny they can be will help GOOD LUCK!

  7. If your mother doesn't like rats' hairless tails, there probably isn't much you can do to convince her otherwise. I'd suggest finding books or articles that talk about the benefits of a rat as a companion, as you say. It's hard to argue with science. :)

Perhaps you could get a mouse, since they have fuzzy tails and are extremely cute, etc, and later try to talk your mom into getting a rat.
