Can you tell me where do people learn that? And how many years. Is there any school like that in Sacramento, CA or close?

  1. All of them who hv answered yr question are right.

There is no shortcut way to captaining a ship. Even through the procedure described - you can count on a minimum of 15 years.

  2. Cal maritime is closest to you.   4 years of school to get 3rd mate.   1 year (working on the water full time) as third mate to get second, 1 year as second to get chief, one as chief to get captain.   That's the best you can hope for.   I've worked with 3rd mates who have their Captain's license, but there aren't any ships available for them to be captain on.   You have to stick with a company for years to get seniority.

  3. go to one of the merchant marine academies. kings point (USMMA), Fort Schuyler (SUNY), Mass Maritime Academy, Maine Maritime, Texas A&M University @ Galveston, Cailforina Maritime Academy. You will graduate with a BS Degree and if you pass, a USCG 3rd Mates license, Unlimited tonnage if you do the Deck route, or a 3rd Engineer of you go the engine room route.

Once a 3rd mate, you got to put i some seatime and pass some USCG exams to get your Masters ticket.  Then you got to find a job as a Ships Master.

I think the California Maritime Academy is near San Fransisco, I think.  Do a google search and find it.  I buddy of mine was a professor there.

    Good luck!

  4. Here is a link to a school in California.  It is a lot of work to become a ship's officer, but it is an interesting career.  Best of luck with your plans.

  5. Captain of a Ship is a long drawn out process . Years some times decades  of training and experience and testing.

Contact local Coast Guard office for direction.

  6. Find out what qualifications you need, get them then apply for a ships officers job and wait for the promotion but it will be a long wait if you ever make it., good luck nice to see ambition
