I really want to be a lifeguard?

this summer, but I don't quite know what to do. (This is my first job)

I filled out the application, but I want to know if I should wait to get my Red Cross Certification done before I turn it in, to look better.

Also, I still need to find out when the next training session starts (which should be soon) but what should I expect?

I'm really clueless! Please tell me everything you know!

  1. It is best to get your certification to be a lifeguard first before you turn your application in. On the American Red Cross website http://www.redcross.org/services/hss/aqu... it explains what they will teach you to do in the class. You will also have to take a written test and a swimming test in order to get your lifeguard certification. Usually you have to be able to tread water with a 10 pound brick for at least 2 minutes, along with being able to swim 500 yards alternating freestyle and breast stroke.

  2. You are fine if you take the certification later, but keep in mind some pools open up this month. I know where i live the next round of lifeguard sessions is in june. If there is competition, the manager will hire a person with a cert. over you. I think it might be too late though. I just took the test last month and i dont know what you should expect. i am a freshman on the varsity swim team so i had no problem in the water. And being an eagle scout, i know my first aid so i would look up some of your questions online and really consider if you want to be a lifeguard.  It will be a demanding job. siting around all day is quite hard believe it or not, because you face the task of staying awake, watching people, and keeping yourself hydrated. You have to know what you are doing and never be clueless, for you have to respond right away in case of an emergency, Think of the name lifeguard, can you do exactly that?
