  1. Hi,

    Petsmart has very colorful parakeets. I love them, they are so pretty!

    The cost of a parakeet at Petsmart is about $14.99.

    Make sure you buy your parakeet some good food. I hate it when people buy some cheap food for their pets just because it costs less. Then they go buy the most expensive piece of steak for themselves. Most cheap food that you buy at non-pet stores lack nutrition. Some parakeet food that I find fabulous is this (click the link in blue):

    You can buy it at petsmart.

    When buying your cage you should not be trying to find the cheapest price as possible. You should be trying to find a good cage for your pet that will allow the bird to fly for exercise. The minimum cage size should be 20''x12''x18'' for one parakeet.

    The space between the bars is also important. If the bars are too far apart you can guess what will happen. The bird will escape. The cages bars should be no wider the 1/2 inch apart.

    I suggest getting a cage that has horizontal bars so the parakeet can climb up the bars more easily. Horizontal bars allow the bird to get a better grip when climbing on the cage.

    Your parakeet will need excersize daily. Before letting you birdie out make sure that ALL doors and windows are closed. Make sure that all ceiling fans or other fans are turned off. Open flames, mirrors, transparent glass, cats, or dogs can all make you birdie pass away. make sure that you have no open flames in your house, cover the mirrors, cover transparent glass (windows or doors), and make sure that a cat or dog isn't in the house.

    Unlike some dogs, parakeets like to take baths everyday. Provide a pan of water about 6 to 8 inches in diameter, with a water depth no deeper than 1 inch. It should not be a swimming pool or your bird might drown. An unused plant saucer will do fine. Keep the pan clean because the bird will drink from it as well. The cage will get messy after a bath, so be prepared to do some cleaning.

    A parakeet needs 12 - 14 hours of sleep. Keep the bird in a quiet place away from TVs or radios. If necessary, cover the cage with a cloth to relax the budgie, and to keep out cold drafts. Leave the cage partially covered so that the budgie can see out. Make sure the cloth does not have a strong smell of detergent since it may cause the bird to have difficulty breathing. Cover the cage around the same time every night so that your parakeet can develop a routine sleeping time.

    Common Diseases: Scaly face disease - This is caused by Cnemodocoptes mites. These mites cause scales to appear on the affected area, usually the face, cere, eyelids and legs, and can cause beak deformities.

    Respiratory Disorders - This is usually caused by living in a dusty environment or by mites. Make sure the bird's cage is cleaned regularly (every week). Respiratory disorders can be treated with Biomycin Antibiotic, available in pet stores.

    Signs of Illness: Sudden changes in behaviour, fluffed up feathers, difficulty breathing, glassy eyes, poor reaction to stimuli, submissiveness, drinking more than usual, lost of appetite, weight loss.

    Please get some more information on parakeets to know exactly what you need to buy. Parakeets need special things like,

    * Cage

    * Food and water containers

    * Food

    * Bird Grit

    * Sand sheets

    * Cuttlefish and Mineral Block

    * Mist spray

    * Toys i.e., mirror, ladder etc

    That is what you need in/out/with your bird/cage.

    If you don't know what something is or why you need it, do some reasearch on it. Here is a lot of information on Budgie Parakeets.

  2. Adopt one! Budgies (parakeets) are highly overpopulated and there are tons in rescues and shelters right now: http://www.petfinder.com/

    Also, please look into their care beforehand: http://www.budgietalk.com/

  3. breeders are very good places to buy them they are very enexpensive they cost from 14$-20$ they can learn to talk but it would be best to buy 2 since parakeets live and breed in big flocks of hundreds of birds or an easyer way is to buy them from petsmart they make sure there happy healthy birds.but dont get your hope up not all of them come nice and playful you might have to teach it to be and finger train it good luck!
