Because Ive always wanted a small dog and before I can convince my parents to let me get it I want to make sure I can care for it. I love these dogs cause theyre sooo adorablee. :]

Anyways, do they shed a whole lot? Do they bark too much? The barking doesnt really bother me, but the shedding might be a problem for my parents. So, anything else I should know about these dogs?

Thankss :]

Oh! And if I get a dog like this:

Will it turn into this as it gets older?

Or is that just a matter of cutting the dogs hair? (because I really like a first one a h*ll of alot better).

Thankss :]

  1. I have a Yorky puppy at the time and my Grandmother breeds them. Most Yorkies don't shed but it depends on the type you have. I recommend the short hair because they will still look a lot like when they are puppies. You should take it to the groomers if the hair gets over the eyes. Wash about once every two weeks and blow dry using a low level.

Barking depends on the dog. Most Yorkies are very protective of their owners. Mine is very friendly towards people that come in the house but will growl at people he hears outside at night. The ones that my grandmother keeps as pets are less friendly and only like them. It depends one how you raise them.

  2. For the shedding part, they wont shed as much if you brush their hair daily. They wont a lot if you teach them not to bark[its better if you teach them when they are puppies].A yorkie's fur will grow long, but if you cut their fur once in a while they wont grow long.

  3. Here is a link to a website with answers to your questions.  As far as barking, I think that pretty much depends on each individual dog, not the breed.  Good luck!

  4. They don't shed, they do bark a little, but they have pretty quiet barks.

They have to be groomed every 4-6 weeks which can get expensive. As long as you get it clipped every 4-6 weeks it will stay with the short hair. They do need weekly brushing.

They can be very stubborn and hard to housebreak.

  5. They do get longer hair eventually, you have to have them groomed often.  You can cut the hair short, I agree, it looks better.  Dog grooming is expensive.  They have silky hair that most people are not allergic to.  I don't know if they shed alot, but I would guess they don't.  Not all small dogs are yappy.  I own a Pomeranian who only barks at the doorbell.  She stops when told to.  It's a matter of training.  You have to put work in to have a well behaved dog.

  6. My friend has that dog, and he doesn't shed.

Barks a little, but at obvious reasons [needs to pee, or smells a stranger]

and if you get a hair cut then it's fine it wont grow that long.[like you showed in the 3rd picture]

  7. AHH, I love yorkies...I've never had one but my best friend did...I would say there pretty easy dogs, expensive if you buy one sometimes, but they are the cutest dogs I think...Anyways my friend never had any major problems with his, now you can get pet insurance pretty cheap too, so that might be something you want to look into...Good luck!!!

My friends dog never shed much that I remember, didn't bark too much either...With the proper training you can get dogs to rarely bark at all...My neighbors also have 2 yorkies and I rarely hear them...One will bark when they leave sometimes. they are great dogs, and training them will make them even better dogs!

  8. My sister has 2 and they are very low maintenance dogs....my sister treats her's like humans and they actually think they are....so really inexpensive to feed as well....a 10 pound bag of Iams lasts her 3-4 months some times longer...and she also grooms them herself.

  9. Our Yorkie has to be groomed very often, but it depends on how well-groomed you want to keep him.

He barks sooo much, it's annoying... When he sees another dog, when he hears a knock at the door, when he hears the doorbell, when he hears the doorbell on TV... yap yap yap yap!!!

He's a cutie, but it took him a long time to get potty-trained, which I've heard is a complaint about Yorkies. He's also smarter than he looks. When it's time to put him in the cage when I go to work, as soon as I let him outside, he runs inside his cage--no training needed! Wow!
