I really want to switch my phone carriers from Sprint (because they are terrible) to Verizon... Is there any way to get out of my contract without paying the earlier determination fee??

  1. lie and say you lost your phone or it was stolen then ask them to just cancel it cause your not paying for something you dnt have.

  2. Early Termination Fee's are one of the hardest things to not pay.  They religiously report to credit bureaus' and will send you to collections AND charge you for collection costs.  (My husband had a company cell phone and when the company changed carriers they did not pay the termination fee and they started calling.  We just let it go, knowing the it was the company's responsibility, and by the time they paid it--only because I called his company and raised cain about the collection calls--his 200 dollar ETF from Verizon was 515.00).

Sprint's ETF is 200 dollars (at least on my contract), you have to decide whether or not it is worth it to get rid of their crappy service...and it is crappy!  Unfortunately, I have three phones on my account, and it is not worth 600 dollars to get rid of their crappy service.

  3. Unfortunately you can not cancel your contract without penalty due to poor service, however you do have a few options open to you.

Sprint now pro-rates their Early Termination Fees.  That means that if the fee on your contract is $200, and you only have a year left on your contract, then your fee is only going to be $100.  If you only have 6 months left, your fee is going to be $50.  So take that into account since paying $50 or $100 might be worth it to get away from the bad service.

Another option is to do a 'transfer of liability' on your phone from your personal account to a large corporate account or government account that has those fees waived.  If your employer is a big company that has thousands of Sprint lines then this is going to be your best option.  Transfer your phone onto their account, and then do the Port to Verizon.  You will of course need your manager's support for this.

  4. I used to work for a wireless carrier. Getting out of an ETF is really difficult, and losing your phone doesn't excuse you from your contract. But there may be some things that do. Call 611 pretending to be someone interested in starting new service and ask a bunch of questions, phishing for a way out. I once got out of a $100 ETF for an internet connection by lying and saying I was moving out of country. You just have to figure out the one or two (if any) ways to get out of it then lie and say that's what you're doing.

Some places give special cancellation to people in the military that are getting shipped off overseas... ;)

  5. To the guy above me, that happened to my brother. They will make you buy a new phone. If you don't buy a new phone then you just pay the monthly fee anyways.
