  9. Most of us on here only have a limited pool of resources for unique names but there are two books you can easily and cheapily get ahold of- both by the author Allison Jones-called Exotic baby names- names from around the world, and her first one (I liked it better) exotic names for the new millineum.

She traveled the world to work with people from other cultures and collect beautiful, authentic and never-over used baby names and has won herself some great honors doing so.

You can also check the social security website to make sure a name you pick isn't so trendy its in the top 1000.

one name out of my favorites

    Matreya/Maitreya- compassionate one, unisex.

  10. Here's an idea: do some searching online for the foreign translation of your first and middle name, the father's first and middle name, and maybe even look up names for some of your favorite family members (and they'll be extremely happy if you named your kid after them!)

For example, the name Mary becomes:

Miriam in Hebrew, Carmita in Spanish, Maia in Basque, Malia in Hawaiian, etc.

    The name Michael becomes:

Miguel in Portugeuse, Mihai in Romanian, Mihail in Croatian, etc.

It might take some searching online to find other variants of names. Check Wikipedia (just do a search on any name, not all are listed) or do a google search with the name plus the words "history" or "origin". Good luck!
