I really want to play quarterback in high school but I don't know what I should do Should I try out for the team or take the year off and get better? If i take the year off and get on the team my sophmore year will I be behind on things and not have scouts notice me for college?

Here are my problems

Bad things: I have never been on a football team so I don't have any real game experience.

I don't have too good of arm strength

I am only 5'4

I am a skinny guy and not the best muscle wise

Good things: I can be a very accurate passer at times but not on deep throws.

I have played quarterback before in pick up games with friends

I am familiar with the different step drops and I can drop back from both my strong and weak sides.

I have good agility and can pass good out of the pocket.

I can read defenses somewhat

So should I try out for the team or take the year off and work on all the bad things the best I can and try again next year?

I don't want to play anything but quarterback and read all of it and give me some advice

  1. Seems like you know what you want and may have "raw" talent. I would say try out. The reality of things is you might not get the position, but youre young and if you commit, you may be an all star by your senior year. Stay motyivated and work hard. Practice. Dont give up. You can grow well over six feet by your senior year. Best bet, I would say to work hard. You should be taking snaps in no time.

  2. man unless your playing for one of the best high school programs in the state you dont take time off to get better like that. Hop right in your freshman year even though you havent played and just be confident you know what you wanna play now let your coaches know that they wont put you down they're there to make you the best player you can be just listen to what the have to tell you and do your best to do exactly what they're telling you. Your the commander on offense the link between the team and the coaches and theres a lot of responsibility its not all about athletiscism. Good luck on your season!

  3. I'd go for it now. If you wait you lose exposure. Coaches may be impressed by your ethic and desire. It's not just performance.

If you sit back, you'll have to convince yourself again, then convince the coaches.

The worst thing that can happen is that you fail. There's nothing wrong with trying and failing.

  4. Jump right in! Your High School program will want to develop you into a QB!

  5. Go out for the team.  Skipping a year would only cause you to miss out on learning an offensive system.  Any position specific skill development can occur during the practice or by attending clinics related to that position in the off season.  By skipping this season, you hurt your development.  All I can say is ask the coaches to try you for the QB position and see what they think.  You may or may not get it, but at least you'll be on the team and learn the basics from other positions.  The QB generally understands the basics of most other positions on the field so learning a non-QB position won't hurt you.

    Things working against you:

    - Lack of any organized football experience

    - 5'4" at the high school level is a bit short.  Can certainly work with it though but may find colleges want taller players.  Remember that the field of candidates shrinks as you progress from youth -> high school -> college -> NFL.

    - Skinny build - you can work with this as you get into a more competitive level, but it shouldn't hold you back at JV.

Be open to learning multiple positions.  Most people fantasize about playing the QB, running back, or receiver positions but realize it takes the whole team to be successful.  Understanding how the positions come together is something that you really learn by playing organized ball and practicing multiple positions.

    ** Edit **

Depending how serious football is in your area (it's big where I live), the coaches may have already been in contact with the "feeder" youth leagues that go into that high school system.  My son is a lineman (can't catch or throw to save his life) and the coaches started talking with him when he was in 8th grade and had him working out with the JV team in the weight room and doing some light running.  The coaches at your high school likely have an idea of who they'll be starting at the QB position so realize you may have a bit of work ahead of you to compete.

  6. Your size is similar to me, but I throw about 50 yards, and I can read defenses like the back of my hand. I say you should play. Do what you want man. Good luck!

  7. Its good to get an early start even if you dont become the starter. You may not even get starting time but commitment is the first start. You'll be on the sidelines but you'll learn the plays and pick up on the mall things.Arm strength is important but you can live without it.You'll get stronger down the line.Size does play a big important in football but again you can live without it.Playing a simple pick up game and playing a real is a lot more different than you think.Defenses from a pick up and real game are much much more different.Dont take the year off it hurts you in the long run.If you want to be good have the guys you do pick up games with help you out.Best thing to do is work on mechanics.Once you get down the mechanics everything else becomes easy.

  8. if you want to get better as a player than you'd better be with the team, you're not going to improve any faster on your own, and as a QB it's important to have a good relationship with the coach and rest of the offense

  9. I would advise that you go out for the team this year.  It will be to your benefit to get to know the program and the coaches, as well as the other players.  Being on the team is a good way to improve your weak points, with the help and use of the resources that the team has.  If you don't feel like the coaches are helping you out enough you can always continue to work on your own.

    Good luck.
