I've been reading up on it a little and everything I've read says that it's not a good idea if you're not already in pretty good shape. So, what would be a good place to start, so I could work my way up? I'm only about 15 pounds overweight, not too bad, but I really want to get back in shape. Also, a friend of mine who I've lost touch with used to take these classes that were designed to get you into outstanding physical shape but also teach self-defense, and I can't remember what she said it was called. It worked, though, because when she started she was about the size I am now and within about 4 weeks she was d**n near ripped. Anyone know what that program might be?

  1. ok, first off thats a load of c**p and its really just an "excuse"

the point of "cardio kickboxing" is to get you to move and get you in shape, not really to teach you "self-defence" its pretty much what billy blanks slapped a catchy marketing term on and sold to millions as "tae bo" but in reality its the same "kickboxing/boxing, etc. used for aeriobic excercise" that was around for as long as balleys has been around (I'm appraoximating).

these classes won't teach you technique for proper self defence, so DON'T rely on them for that.  they are just classes to get you moving for excercise.  however if you like the class looking up a real muai thai or san da or plain old kickboxing class would be the next logical step for self-defence.

  2. That's rubbish honey. Just go, you'll soon get in shape. If you're that worried about the physical state you're in go swimming or cycling a few times first.Don't wait til your in perfect shape or you'll never end up going.

  3. Most martial arts schools will get you in shape to some degree, but please consider "cardio kickboxing" as an exercise, not as a form of self defense.

I would recommed more of a sport style of self defense for you, given your stated goals - Tae Kwon Do, Boxing, and true Kickboxing (as opposed to "cardio-kickboxing") will train you more on technique, philosophy, and opponent-based interaction (sparring) while having more of a sport/workout philosophy than some arts.

Cardio kickboxing will get you in shape, but you won't know what it feels like to punch, kick, find appropriate distance, use correct technique, etc. to actually defend yourself.  The main focus there is to "do" a punch or kick - not to throw it correctly.  If you decide to pursue this, great!  It's exercise, which is better than not exercising, and I understand the classes are fun.

One other thing - getting "ripped" happens in the kitchen AND at the gym.  If you really are thinking of getting rid of 15 lbs, start with diet - it'll make the pounds melt away even faster.  (I got my mother doing some stuff about 3 months ago - she's lost 18 lbs by watching her food intake and walking her dog.)
