I filed my taxes married, and with two dependents, but my stimulus check was only 1200. when it should have been 1800. I read online that they probbly wont give me the rest anytime soon and that I will just have to file it in my taxes for next year, but I want to know if this is true or has anyone had this problem fixed please let me know what could I do??

  1. When you got your letter, did it say $1200 for you and your spouse and zero for kids, or $600 for you and your spouse, $600 for kids?

If it said $600 for you, and $600 for your kids, the $1200 is most likely correct and you won't be getting any additional amount either this year or next year. Your stimulus payment is based on your net federal income tax for 2007. If your tax was between $600 and $1200 on your joint return, you get back everything you paid. If your tax was less than $600, you get an even better deal, and get $600, even MORE than you paid in. If you paid over $1200 though, your rebate is limited to $1200. The rebate amount on a joint return is $600 UP TO $1200, not a flat $1200 even if you didn't owe that much tax.

Your net income tax liability is one of the following depending on which form you filed:

    ·On Form 1040, the amount shown on Line 57 plus the amount on Line 52;

·On Form 1040A, the amount shown on Line 35 plus the amount on Line 32; or

·On Form 1040EZ, the amount on Line 10.

If the letter said $1200 for you, nothing for the kids, and the kids are under age 17, then you might have more coming.  You might have forgotten to check the box in the dependents section to say they were qualifying children for the child tax credit.  If that's the problem, then you'll still get the additional money - see the last question at http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,i...

  2. Maybe because you file married together.  When I got my check I file married but separated. I got $600.00 and my husband got $600.00 too. Everyone gets a different amount. I know this lady that got less than $600.00. I don't know how they come up with the amount that everyone gets. Try calling  the IRS and see what they say. You know  the IRS will tell you anything you need to know about your stimulus check and taxes. Keep on top of it. Good luck

  3. Had you used the IRS Stimulus Rebate Calculator, if so what amount did it state you qualified for?  Is the amount different than what you received is that why you are saying it is incorrect?

Visit IRS website www.irs.gov and use the stimulus calculator if the amount is different than what you received and you have not received a letter from IRS explaining the difference then call 1-800-829-1040 for more information.

  4. You each received $300, which should be correct.

The rebate payment is equal the amount of tax liability on the return (tax liability on the return Form 1040 line 46 or Form 1040A line 28) with a minimum amount of $600 and a maximum amount of $1200 for individuals.

If you do not receive full amount of $600 now, then you may get the balance amount when you file your 2008 return, and you become eligible for the tax rebate.

For information on stimulus tax rebate read: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/02/are-...

  5. Either you didnt have a tax liability or one of your children didnt qualify for the child tax credit.

Tax liability is the amount of money the government kept, pluss the child tax credit.  It only includes income taxes, not other taxes such as self employment, or the 10 percent tax for early withdrawl from a pension.

The additional payment for qualifying children is based on the children you have that qualify for the child tax credit.  So if you have any children that are 17 or older dont qualify.

Your answer is in your tax return

  6. You are NOT guaranteed $1800 - that is the MAXIMUM you could get.  Take your 2007 federal return and run the numbers through the rebate calculator at www.irs.gov.

  7. The mount an individual receives depends on how much money they made.  If you didn't make much money, your refund would be 300 not 600.  Sames goes for your husband.
