I received something as a gift and the person didn't have a receipt to hand over though the item was bought at a WalMart store what could be done as in returning the item for store credit or something?

Simply that:  a credit or an exchange.

If you don't have the receipt, you get store credit for the last amount it was on sale for. So even if someone paid $50 for it and if it was on sale recently for $35, you only get $35 credit.
