  1. That was me !!!

If you travel at non-rush hour, nobody will give you a hard time.

Ex:  people are NOT suppose to take bicycles on the NYC subways.  But for the most part, if done out side of rush hour, nobody ever complains and nobody ever gets a ticket.

    Good Luck...

  2. Where in Queens?  It is a big place.  There are a number of subway lines and many areas in Queens that are served only by buses or by Long Island Railroad.

Rush Hours are weekdays 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM to 7 PM

    Option 1:

NJ Transit from Newark Penn Station to NY Penn Station.  $4.00

At NY Penn there is the E train that runs along Queens Blvd in Queens as an express or walk one block to 6th Av/Broadway for the F or V train which also runs along Queens Blvd in Queens.  The F train is an express in Queens, the V is a local in Queens.  Also (in adjacent station) there is the N and W trains which run to Astoria, Queens and the R train which operates as a local along Queens Blvd (like the V train).

The E train goes only as far as Archer Av in Jamiaca, Queens, The F as far as 179th St, Jamaica Queens.

    Subway fare is $2.00

    Option 2:

From Newark Penn station take the PATH (Fare $1.75 per person) to Journal Square, transfer across the platform to a 33rd St train.  Take that to 33rd St/6th Av/Broadway where you can get the NYC subway lines (F, V, N, R, W as described above).

For southern Queens there is the "A" train to either Lefferts Blvd (Ozone Park) or Far Rockaway in Queens available at NY Penn Station.

You can take luggage on all trains and while it won't be as cumbersome on NJ Transit because they have overhead luggage racks, it will be rather cumbersome on PATH and the NYC subway because they don;'t have luggage racks.

The majority of NYC subway stations do not have escalators or elevators.

The same goes for NYC buses - no luggage racks.

It would have been better if you had been more specific as to where in Queens.

I see that bicycles were mentioned in the other answer.

For NJ Transit rules on Bicycles:

    http://www.njtransit.com/rg/rg_servlet.s...

    PATH rules:

"You may not enter a PATH station with a bicycle on weekdays between 6:30 am and 9:30 am and between 3:30 pm and 6:30 pm. No more than two bicycles are permitted on a PATH car and bicycles are not permitted in the first railcar of a train."

The NYC subway is less restrictive but the bicycle may not block or otherwise impede the flow of passenger traffic in a station, on a platform or in a subway car.  It is not recommended that a person with a bicycle ride on the subway during the rush hours unless they ride in the rear cars of the train (which are less crowded)
