four wheel drive fuse keeps blowing out and he thinks that may be the issue. Does anyone know what other problems it can be and how much around it would cost to fix? Please let me know. Thanks

  1. It sounds to me like you should have gotten a carfax report on this before you bought it.  It's my guess that a wire going to that circuit got pinched during repairs after an accident.  It might be a bad solenoid in the transfer case and a shorted one would blow a fuse but I think the previous owner would have fixed that before selling it since that is a cheap repair.  My guess is that they had no clue what was causing it and hoped you wouldn't notice till after you bought it.  Good Luck as I think you'll need it.  I hope I'm wrong!

  2. You need to find the cause of the fuse to keep blowing. It could be either the actuator on the transfer case or the actuator on the front axle. Or it could be the wiring going to either unit.

I can't see it being more than $500 including labor. You need to verify each actuator (to see if it is pulling too much current).

First try disconnecting the actuators, then try 4wd, if the fuse blows you have a wiring issue. If it doesn't blow, then one of the actuators is bad. Then connect 1 at a time to determine which is the culprit.

  3. No, that's not the issue.  The fuse is doing its job, blowing to keep the vehicle from catching fire or draining the battery.  The issue is something in the 4 wheel drive circuit that is shorted or somehow drawing too much current.

Frankly I'd find someone with a little more knowledge.  The tech you have now is stating something that isn't making sense.

As to what it could be, and cost, I don't have a guess, it could be a number of things from a simple shorted wire to needing new parts.
