I currently have St Augustine grass covering half my yard and my other half is some marathon type 2 grass which i don't really like i just put it on so it would cover everywhere quickly. so here is the problem I recent PUT fertilizer/WeedKILLER and now my grass is really greeen butttt i have some marathon cheap grass growing over my st augustine i really dont like that i was expecting st augustine to take over but it doesnt seem that way at thsi moment so wat can i do? and why have this cheap really green grass grown over my st augustine?

The grass that has grown over the st augustine grass is some sort of really long thin grass but green cheap grass idk wat it may be called but i want it to stop plz and thank you

and how can i make all of my grass turn into st augustine in less than a year without buying more grass?Would cutting a square from st augustine and applying it to the other side work?

Thank you very much for your concern and ur time sincerely Chad

  1. If your cheap grass is rye grass, it is an annual grass, and will not come back next year as long as you keep it mowed and not go to seed. I think St Augustine will win out over anything. fertilized/weed killer will not kill rye grass and is not recommended for St Aug.

  2. it sounds like rye grass so if you can wait till it cools off some i would spray atrazine it will take care of rye and keep it from coming back.

  3. If its marathon type 2 its not rye grass. So you may need to use a systemic weed killer like round-up to get rid of it. The type II marathon is fescue-- hubbard 87 and Baja.It will be difficult to cut plugs from your st augustine yard and fill in. Maybe just kill it off in stages (the marathon) and re sod since there is at least something growing there, it wont look so bad and you can have it all replaced in a reasonable time.
