I want to know how long can I live outside the US while travelling once or twice to the US before losing my green card status? I will go and live in the US but I need to find a suitable job first. I am now working in the UK and paying tax.

  1. A green card holder must pay income tax in the U.S. as a resident on his world-wide income. If you are only paying tax in the U.K., that is going to put a bullet in your case's heart.

It's a myth are that a green card and permanent resident status may be reserved and not taken away if a permanent resident living abroad comes to the United States once a year.

Permanent resident status may be "lost" if it is deemed abandoned. The validity of the alien registration ("green") card as a travel document, as well as the retention of

permanent resident status come into play when a permanent resident spends a substantial amount of time abroad.

A permanent resident living abroad must maintain ties to the United States or else risk being denied admission or placed in removal proceedings based upon an allegation of

    abandonment of permanent resident status.

Abandonment may occur even in the case of an absence of less than one year, or in rare circumstances, of less than six months, when the evidence shows few or no ties to the

United States and extensive ties abroad.

So, it doesn't matter how long you're gone if you don't have any strong ties to the U.S.

  2. I have friends who live in U.S. for over 30 years, and are not U.S. citizens, only have Alien registration card, a.k.a. Green Card, and they travel to Europe as many times as they want on the green card. Whether you will lose your G.C. status because you live more in U.K. than in U.S. I`m not sure,...but I dont think you will....it is valid until you get citizenship...
