  1. I'd cash the check, but wait at LEAST 10 days before you did anything with the money.  If the check fails, you know it was fake.  If after about 10 days in your account it doesn't fail, it's ok.

On the other hand, if you get requested to return any part of that money to someone else, let your bank know.  There's a good chance either a scam or money laundering is going on.

  2.     This is pretty simple. If it seems to good to be true, it probobly is. No company ever just sends someone free money. I would take the check to the bank and ask what they think. If they say it's good, cash the check but deposit the whole amount in your checking account for a minimum of 10 business days. Don't spend ANY of the money at all. Often times fake checks are easily cashed at the local bank but once they get to the corporate level they are deemed to be fakes. If this happens you will have to pay back the entire amount plus a bounce fee.

If after 10 business days you don't hear anything back about the check, you should be able to safely keep the money and pull it out of the bank.

Odds are, you'll get to the bank and they will identify it as a fake. At least then you'll know for sure!
