I reformated my hard drive

I reformated my hard drive and I had used a San Disk Cruzer 1 GB hard drive to back up my data.After reformatting I can't read the San Disk.My boyfriend's past taxes are on this San Disk Cruzer. Any way to get the data out of the San Disk.When I put it in the computer it asks to reformat the San Cruzer and I say no as I think it will erase the data.
