It looks as though the s***w broke the flange. But I am not sure. I would like to know what caused the break so that I may correct it. Also, the caulking around the base of the bowl was not level--one side has a thick layer of caulking while the other side is very thin and shallow. Please help!

  1. do you mean the base of the toilet bowl where the bolt goes broke?  or the flange that the bowl bolts to?  either way, it sounds like it was caused by the toilet being unevenly seated on the floor.  If the caulking was uneven then the toilet was uneven, and any weight placed on the high side would transfer the the lowside and could break it.  Flanges, however are usually pretty strong.  unless it was metal and fairly old and rusted.

after it's repaired I would make sure the toiled is sitting evenly on the floor, so that the entire weight of the toiled is on the floor only.  the bolts should only be tight enough to keep it from moving around.  beter to be too loose and have to tighten them a little in a week then to have them too tight.

  2. Must have been plastic. You should be able to get a repair for the collar at your plumbing supply house. The wax is un-level either because it was improperly installed or the closet flange sits higher on 1 side than the other.
